Further, in this report, the recommendations will be given for managing effective teamwork in the organization.
About Inter-professional Collaboration and Service user safety
Interprofessional collaboration is the process of practice with which the health care organizations are approaching patient care from a team-based perspective rather than an individual perspective (Hardin, Kilian & Spykerman, 2017). It means that the treatment and assessments are done together in the health care organization while focusing on the patients as a whole. It has been analyzed that in the Interprofessional collaboration two or more professional backgrounds meet, interact, and learn together while practising with the client at the centre. Service user safety or patient safety in healthcare is important as it emerges with the evolving complexity in health care systems. Service user safety aims to reduce risks, errors & harms that occur to the patient during the provision of health care. Inter-professional collaboration is a partnership that creates a team to achieve the common goal to improve the outcomes of patients. It has been identified that the inter-collaboration team is important for health care organizations because it will help them to satisfy the patients without any medical errors (Pantha, Jones & Gray, 2020).
Key issues of the lack of teamwork concerning inter-professional collaboration
It has been identified that many key issues occur the most when the health care organizations are not able to care for a patient safely. For inter-professional collaboration, teamwork and communication are very important to get success while treating the patients safely (Hwang, Kim & Chin, 2019). It has been identified that inter-professional teamwork is a projecting factor in the quality of care which will improve patient safety. The key issues are as follows: The lack of inter-professional collaborations affects the performance of healthcare professional which decrease the brand image of the healthcare organizations in the minds of customers. While having a lack of teamwork in the healthcare organizations, it has been analysed that the professionals of healthcare may lose the motivation and knowledge which will lead to a decrease in inefficiency. It has been identified that a lack of teamwork will results in conflict management because all the professionals like nurses and physicians are not able to understand and communicate properly with each other things while will result in satisfied patients. The inter-professional team in healthcare organizations are not able to meet the goals and objectives on time because of a lack of teamwork which may decrease the level of motivation and hence, there will be an increase in the employee turnover rate. An individual nurse could not be able to manage the patients effectively while giving satisfaction to them from the health care. To successfully achieve patient satisfaction, a team is always be required by the health care professionals.
Key issues of the lack of teamwork concerning the patient safety
It has been identified that patient safety, teamwork and communication have been playing a significant role in providing quality health care services in organizations. For patient safety, it has been identified that when all the professionals and non-professionals staff collaborate effectively then it may possible that the health care teams can improve the outcomes of patient safety, increase the satisfaction of the patient, improve efficiency, and prevent medical errors (Schimith et al., 2021). It has been analysed that the lack of teamwork decreases the quality and safety of patient which adversely affect the delivery of health services of the organization. The lack of teamwork in the health care organizations reduces the level of satisfaction of the patients which leads to a decrease in the numbers of patients in the organization. The lack of teamwork impacts the coordination between the team members which results in conflicts and are not achieve the targets successfully while treating the patients. When the team members are not trained properly then it will create issues for the team to achieve the common goal because on an individual basis the professional expert has no knowledge and experience to achieve the goals in the health care organization. Concerning patient safety, the team members need proper coordination to complete the treatment. If the lack of teamwork is there then how will the team members manage the coordination and communication between them (Källberg et al., 2017). The term coordination is an important element to achieve the goals in the team, especially in health care organizations because patient safety is depending on the effectiveness of the team members.
The integrated model of team effectiveness for patient safety in healthcare
For the successful delivery the health care services, the healthcare organizations has needed team members who have enough knowledge about treating the patients. The health care organization needs to have an integrated model of team effectiveness for the safety of patients (Norwich et al., 2018). The integrated model will be explained below with the help of a diagram for a better understanding.
Figure 1: An integrated model of team effectiveness
It has been identified from the above model that for the safety of patients team climate and organizational culture are the two most important aspects which give quality service to the patients. For patient safety, the aspects of emergent states are also important which include mutual trust, psychological safety, cohesion, collective survey, and so on. These aspects then turn the organization, team, individual, and patent health as a whole according to this integrated model of team effectiveness for patient safety. It has been identified from the above graph that patient, team, individual, and task characteristics are important to make inter-team processes for managing the teams effectively. With the help of this integrated model, the team members of a health care organization can easily achieve the satisfaction level of patients (Martinez et al., 2017). It has been identified that with the help of this model, the outcome of the team members will be positive as they will care for the patients effectively while building relations with the team members.
The above model shows that teamwork is important for providing quality services to patients. It has been identified that the inter-team processes team has effective communication, coordination, cooperation, coaching, and cognition. All these aspects help the team members for delivering quality services to the patients. It has been analysed that with the help of this model the staff of health care professionals can easily take care of the patients while working in a team with coordination. While using this model, it has been identified that the staff of the healthcare organizations can reduce medical errors while treating the patients in a team. It is essential to have team members so that they will be able to give quality health care services. This should be adopted by healthcare organizations for providing quality services to patients.
While creating this report, it has been identified that there are many key issues concerning the team effectiveness for the patient safety and inter-professional collaborations which has been identified above in detail. To eliminate those issues, some recommendations will be provided for the health care organization for giving quality services to the patients. These are as follows:
Facilitate communication: The first step that should be done by the health care organizations is to improve the communication between the team members. It has been analysed that effective communication will be an essential part of the successful delivery of health care services (Gallagher et al., 2020). This should be done by the health care organizations for eliminating or removing the key issues concerning the team effectiveness. It has been identified that building effective team communication is very important.
Handling conflicts: For managing the team members effectively, healthcare organizations should be able to handle the conflicts among the team members. The team effectiveness will be playing an important role in providing quality delivery to the patients in the health care organizations. It has been identified that all the key issues of interprofessional collaboration and patient safety will be eliminated while handling the conflicts of the team members. So the healthcare organization should also make a leader of the team who will be responsible for all the things that will happen while taking care of the patients.
Expand a team while including other areas of team expertise: It has been identified that in the inter-professional collaboration there are many professionals included from different expertise for giving quality care to patients (Webb et al., 2021). This recommendation should adopt by the health care organization while making the new team members. It has been identified that the different expertise professionals should be trained and experienced for maintaining the team members effectively. This will help the health care organizations to manage the patients effectively while giving them satisfaction from the treatment.
Clarify roles and responsibilities: This is very important for building the team in a health care organization. The health care organizations should clarify the roles and responsibilities of the team members so that they will accordingly with the team members effectively. For the successful delivery of the treatment of patients, all the team members must be cleared about their roles and responsibilities. For removing the issues and problems this should be done by the healthcare organizations so that they can improve the team's efficiency.
It has been concluded that the effectiveness of team members is more important for the successful delivery of health care services than the other factors of humans. It has been identified that inter-professional collaboration is essential for the satisfactory delivery to the patients. It has also been analysed that while working with the team members many issues have been facing by the team members like conflict issues, not understanding properly each other, communication issues, and so on. These are some issues that have been identified by the healthcare organizations while working in the inter-professional collaboration for patient safety. It has been identified that with the help of an integrated model of team effectiveness for the safety of patients the things can be easily achievable by the healthcare experts. The integrated model has been explained with which the team members can easily communicate, coaching, collaborate, coordinate and cooperate while having a positive culture in the organization. This model has been helping the team members effectively manage the coordination between them while providing quality care to them. It has also been analysed that for all the key issues the healthcare organization should facilitate communication, expand their team with other team professionals, and clarify the roles and responsibilities individually.
